Superintendent Message For December 9, 2016

Dear Olentangy families,

I hope you are staying warm - It’s getting cold out there and we saw some snowflakes yesterday! As we approach winter and potential inclement weather, now is a good time to remind you of our calamity day procedures.

The decision to delay or close school is based on a wide variety of factors. Beginning at around 4 a.m., a team of school district employees assess the road conditions by driving in assigned areas throughout the district. After evaluation of the weather conditions and road safety, staff members report their assessment to me along with reports from other area schools and law enforcement. I combine my own experience driving on the roads with their reports and shoot to make a decision to delay or close school for the day between 5:15 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.

As soon as a decision is made, the district will use a variety of communication methods to inform students, parents and staff members as quickly as possible. A phone call will be made using our calling system, and the district will notify local radio and television stations. In addition, the information will appear on the district’s website, social media channels and via our district e-news emails. For the fastest weather delay or cancellation notification, follow me on Twitter @SuperOLSD.

The safety of our students is our top priority when determining whether school is delayed or canceled. In addition, traction for our buses and for motorists driving in the vicinity of our buses is a factor. Visibility and wind chill factors are also a consideration. Olentangy Local Schools covers 95 square miles of diverse terrain. Often times, inclement weather conditions that appear in one portion of the district may not be as severe in another but may warrant a delay or closing for overall safety reasons.

So, bundle up and stay tuned for potential inclement weather and next steps as we prepare for another winter season! You can find more information about our cancellation and delay procedures as well as frequently asked questions here.

Have a great weekend!

Proud to serve as your Superintendent,
