Board Highlights For September 6, 2018

The following is a summary of the Olentangy Local School District Board of Education's September 6, 2018 Business Session held at the District's Administrative Office at 7840 Graphics Way.

Presentations:

Bethany Lenko, food service supervisor, and Allisha Berendts, student well being supervisor, presented an update from Food Service and the District Wellness Committee. Last year, the district served more than 2 million meals during 172 days in service. The District Wellness Committee is reviewing current wellness policies to ensure we are following guidelines and will soon roll out a district-wide survey to assess district needs.

Tim Beard, supervisor of data and assessment, presented on state and local assessment programs. He shared results of 2017/2018 testing, plus an update on 2018/2019 required state tests.

Jackie Powers Merkle, curriculum supervisor for equity & inclusion, shared 2017/2018 initiative and program highlights and the Diversity Committee Action Plan for this school year. The plan includes commitments to students, OLSD staff, and the community in order to promote a culture of inclusive excellence.

Board President's Report:

Board President Mindy Patrick thanked all Olentangy teachers and staff who got the school year off to a great start.

Board Member Roger Bartz presented a brief update on facilities mentioning the planned additions on three existing elementary schools is in process and construction is set to begin in November.

Superintendent's Report:

Superintendent Mark Raiff shared many ways the district is living its mission including: 500 students received perfect scores on one or more parts of state tests administered last spring, character development programs taking place at various schools, community involvement from Olentangy Rotary, etc.

Treasurer's Report:

District Treasurer Emily Hatfield provided an update regarding the sale of bonds for the elementary building additions project, provided an update on House Bill 87 which addresses money returned to the state from community school audits. And thanked Athletic Boosters groups for recent donations to the district.

Action Items:

All action items were approved as presented. Highlights include:

  •  Approved administrative employment for the 2018-2019 school year for Joseph P. Suozzi, director of safety, security and preparedness.
  •  Approved contract amendment with Construction Analysis, LLC for Owner’s Representative services for the Construction of elementary classroom additions in the amount of $70,200.
