Scheduling Information for the 2020-2021 School Year

Counselors will be presenting academic advising and scheduling information to all students from Jan. 14-16.  Students will then have time to consult with parents and teachers for next year's course selections.  Students should enter course requests through their PowerSchool portal and fill out their course request cards.

Counselors will then have individual student meetings to advise and confirm their selections during the following dates:
Orange MS:  Jan. 28
Berkshire MS: Jan. 30
Freshmen: Jan. 24, 27, 31
Sophomores: Feb. 3, 4, 6
Juniors: Feb. 10, 11, 12

The LAST DAY to make course request changes is the last day of school, May 21.  The earlier a student submits a change request, the more likely it can be accommodated.

COURSE SELECTION GUIDE FOR 2020-2021 - This guide lists all the course offerings available at OOHS.

Scheduling Meeting for Parents of Incoming Freshmen
In case you were not able to attend this meeting on Thursday, January 12th, we are attaching the PowerPoint for you to reference.

Visual Arts Course Offerings
Choosing a Visual Arts course is exciting, but can also be difficult and confusing because of all the options! All students must first take a semester of Art 1, then are numerous options to take in the areas of drawing, sculpture, ceramics, computer graphics, jewelry/metals, digital imaging, photography, and painting. All art studio classes are 1 semester long and students need 1 credit/2 semesters of fine art for graduation (i.e.: Art 1 + 1 level one art course). If you love history and the arts, sophomores, juniors, and seniors should look at AP Art History, a year-long focus course on art history taught by Ms. Kikta. AP Art History is a great gateway course for students interested in starting AP courses! Art 1 is not required to take AP Art.
**NEW ART COURSE NAMES!** For 2020-2021 we are changing the names of courses to better reflect the curriculum. When students make their scheduling wish list, they will probably see the old course names, but when we finalize the schedule the new names will be entered into the system. The course curriculum is not changing - only the name.
Jewelry Jewelry & Metals
Digital Imaging Digital Art & Design
Computer Graphics Modeling & Animation
If you have any questions about scheduling or which course would be a great option for you, please see the attached flyer and/or contact any of the art teachers at OOHS!

This course is designed to assist college-bound students who wish to complete a college-oriented internship in high school.  Selection is based on an application process.  Mentorship is a semester course that allows the students to gain firsthand experience in a career of their choice. Students complete career assessments, prepare a resume and practice interview skills, among other life-planning activities.  The application is due on February 13.

Add a class to your schedule where you demonstrate initiative and helpfulness to your community!   Service Learning is a course designed to provide students the opportunity to experience hands-on learning through volunteering in the community.  Students will identify community and global needs and participate in service opportunities in class.

The goal of Teacher Academy is to prepare high school juniors and seniors to enter a post-secondary education program.  This yearlong course is scheduled the last two periods of the day and allows students to spend almost 100 hours in classrooms learning what teaching is about. Students can earn college credit upon completion of this course.  Applications due by January 24.

Scheduling is right around the corner. If your child is considering a career in the business industry, encourage them to enroll in the business classes at OOHS. Students who will be juniors next school year may apply for Marketing Applications and Principles by January 17.  Students who will be seniors next year may apply for Integrated Marketing Communications and Internship by January 17.  Applications for both courses are available in Fort Orange or attached to this newsletter. If you or your student have questions, please contact Mrs. Shanahan in Fort Orange.

Theatre classes teach students about much more than performing - critical thinking, confidence, creativity, collaboration, and communication are just a few of the skills they will develop.  See what is available this year, including new offerings.
