Purple Star Award 2019

The Purple Star Award for military-friendly schools recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. Schools that earn the award will receive a special Purple Star recognition to display onsite.

A school will be honored with the Purple Star Award if it completes all the required activities, plus one optional activity, listed below. The Purple Star Advisory Board, formed by the Ohio departments of Education, Higher Education, Veterans Services and the Adjutant General, helps decide a school’s eligibility for the award.

On Friday, September 13, 2019, Heritage will be recognized as a Purple Star Award school.  A special thank you goes to Mrs. Julie Shaw and Mr. Kevin Pulfer, who will accept the award at the Orange High School football game.  Their efforts, along with the entire Heritage community, demonstrate how much we honor and appreciate those who stand for freedom.

Heritage wanted to start building awareness of military families at our school and in our neighborhoods. We started at a personal level, asking all of the children in the school to contribute a “brick” to our school “wall” for Veterans Day. Students wrote the names and shared pictures of their friends and families who have/had served in the military. This project personalized veterans by bringing names and faces to our school. Children found out about neighbors and friends that they never knew were veterans.  We will continue with projects that remind all of us to remember our veterans.  If you have an interest in helping or ideas to continue these good works, please contact Julie Shaw at julie_shaw@olsd.us.
