PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE: BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL UPDATE

1/31/20

Bears - Another banner week here at Berlin!  Students, staff and the Berlin community accomplished A LOT this week.  Here is a "to the point" run-down:
  • Our Student Services Counselors visited all of our middle schools for the second time in 2 weeks and met with every single "rising bear" and collected scheduling sheets, reviewed on-line requests, answered questions, advised and made recommendations for upcoming 20-21 classes!!
  • All of our returning students (current 9th, 10th,11th) need to have their scheduling sheet turned in by February 7th along with their on-line requests completed through PowerSchool.  Any questions?? Please reach out to Student Services. Student Services Information
  • Academically, there were many assessments and checkpoints in our classrooms and teachers and students were able to assess where they were with that particular unit, lesson or topic. This is always a priority, but especially at the mid-way point through the 9 weeks, it is more crucial than ever!
  • Celebrations continue on 3140BSR...  We celebrated the hard work of 12 of our students at the January Student of the Month ceremony!  They were recognized for academic achievement and for being all around great Bears!
  • We have over 40 large metal picture frames all over the building, 11x17 and 17x24 inch color photos in each frame that highlight our students.  These pictures are rotated once or twice a month so that we are able to celebrate academics, athletics, the arts and student life. We support everyone wearing the DOUBLEBLUE!
  • Our athletic teams continue to do great things.  Our Boys basketball team logged a couple of wins over the last 3-4 games!  Our gymnastics team continues to dominate in most categories. Our bowling and swimming teams are finishing 1st or 2nd in tournaments and meets.  The list goes on and on!

Once again, it was a great week at Berlin, and I know I probably forgot a thing or two, but that is a good overview!  With that being said, here is a list of things on the horizon here at Berlin:

  • Black History Month celebration is happening all of February!  We will have many, many interactive activities each day honoring Influential African Americans.
  • We are on a Homebase schedule Tuesday February 4th and Tuesday February 11th. Please plan accordinglyBell Schedules
  • First Responders Night is Friday, February 7th.First Responders Night Information
  • Parent / Teacher Conferences are Thursday Feb 13th and 20th from 3:30pm-7pm. Conference Information
  • Our theater department is performing CINDERELLA February 21-23
  • Our Juniors will be taking the ACT on February 26th.Junior ACT information

That is all for now.  I appreciate your continued support and I look forward to talking with you soon!

Please always remember....Berlin Pride, It's Forever!

Bears -

We have reached the end of another great week here at 3140 Berlin Station Road!  What a week we have had....  All good, but very, very busy!
We had well over 700 parents, students, teachers and coaches here on Wednesday night for our Rising Bear night.  Our student services department was all here running the show.  They talked about classes, expectations for scheduling, the scheduling process, credits, eligibility and many, many other items.  I was even allowed to talk for a few minutes and shared a lot about our culture and climate.  Things such as:

CLAWSUP!
Berlin Pride.....It's Forever!
3140 Berlin Station Road
Bear-bump with a claws up
DoubleBlue Friday and many others...

With that being said, parents and students were able to hear about scheduling, purchase Berlin gear, and got to talk to a member of each department at Berlin.  Wow, what a night!!  All of the information shared with everyone can be found on our website.Berlin Website

In addition to that night, we have had a lot of in-school success with labs, collaboration groups and different class assessments.  I am always out and about in our building and I am always amazed at the number of "out of the box" thinking that occurs in the halls, collaboration spaces, labs, commons, etc..

On the athletic front, our teams continue to amaze and impress while competing.  ALL of our teams are doing well, but our Hockey team has an 18-5 record, our gymnastics team is undefeated and our girl's basketball and wrestling programs are making very noticeable strides.  We recognized all teams at the winter pep rally a couple weeks ago.

In the world of performing arts, our Band is performing tonight at the halftime show and this is something to see!  Our theater department is getting ready to put on a great rendition of Cinderella!  This is a classic and always a favorite!  Our Art program is also making noise through sculpture, paintings and other varieties of art work.  They entered a contest 2-3 weeks ago, and had the most awards out of the 4 high schools in the district!  What a big accomplishment for a second year school!!

Last, we continue to do great things for other people.  At the February 7th boy's basketball game, we will be honoring our first responders.  All first responders will be announced at halftime of the game.  In addition, if you bring a carbon monoxide detector or smoke detector still-in the packaging, you will get 2 free tickets to the game.  We are working to make this a yearly practice as a way to not only thank the brave men and women who are first responders, but to honor and remember the Reitter family and pay tribute to them for years to come.  Members of their family will be on hand to help us with the tribute.

Last, at that same game, we will be proudly accepting a check from the Tri-Village Sertoma organization which established the Reitter Family Memorial Fund through the Olentangy Education Foundation (OEF), to honor the memory of the Reitter Family.  Grants made in memory of the Reitter family will be used to enhance the educational experience of students across Olentangy Schools for years to come.  This certainly will be a night to remember.

As always, thank you for your support and remember, Berlin Pride....It's Forever!!

Bears -

Another great week at 3140BSR!!  The second semester is off and running!  The first couple of days (as expected) we had students come down to student services getting schedules changed or updated, but the last couple of days have been very quiet in that office area.  Our teachers and students have hit the ground running and the halls are quiet during class-time because of all the in class activities.  In addition to that, I have been invited into more classes the last few days to watch creative and innovative lessons because our teachers continue to challenge students and they are all meeting those challenges with flying colors.

We are beginning to get into conversations about classes for next year and start the scheduling process discussions.  Please be on the lookout for emails, social media blasts and information from our student services office about classes for next year if you have a current 9th, 10th or 11th grade student.  Scheduling timeline and information can be found on the Berlin website.  For our class of 2024, we will hold our Rising Bear night on Jan 22nd from 6:30-7:30 in the auditorium, and then at 7:30, we will have groups, clubs and teachers available in the commons to answer questions and promote programs!!

If you have a senior student, we continue to call them down to the office to make sure they are on track to graduate and are staying the course with graduation requirements.  Speaking of seniors...  Next Friday is the last day for seniors to make sure they have a picture in the yearbook.  We have announced it over and over again, and it is on the website as well.  This is just another reminder for seniors to make sure they see Mrs Bush to get their picture in the yearbook.

If for any reason, you have a scheduling question, please do not hesitate to call the building (740) 657-5900 and speak with someone in student services.  Or, please feel free to email your students counselor:

Of course you may reach out anytime to the building if you have a question, but especially around scheduling time and since we have seniors for the first time, this is good information to have in front of you.

In Sports, we had a great event (some might say HISTORIC) last night, as we had our very first ever combined gymnastic and wrestling competition. It was a packed gymnasium and very well recieved!!  We also won both contests - GO BEARS!

Last, we have our pep rally today, and it will be in honor of our winter sport athletes!  This is always a good time and a way to make memories for our students for years to come.

That is all for now, I look forward to talking with you soon!  Remember, "Berlin Pride.....It's Forever!!"

Bears-

We have had a fantastic first semester at 3140BSR!  I am very proud of all the accomplishments that we have experienced together as a BEAR family.

Whether it was in the classroom, on the field, the stage, the court, the mat, the woodshop, the overlook, media center or anywhere else in and around the school, all of us have a lot to be proud of and be thankful for.

With that being said, the exam days went very well and we are wrapping things up in the building and office area preparing for winter break.  We will have several activities, games and events over break, so I would encourage you to check out the athletic events on the Berlin athletic website.

Likewise, I always take pictures and give updates on the official building twitter site @todd_spinner

That is all for now, so please enjoy a safe, happy and healthy holiday season and I look forward to seeing you over the break or when we resume for the second semester.

CLAWSUP and remember, Berlin Pride....It’s Forever!!

Sincerely,

Mr Spinner

Hello Bear Families,

I wanted to take a minute and end the week before exam week with my weekly communication that can be found in the Principal's message section of our website entitled "Bear Tracks".  However, I wanted to also send it in an email form because I always tell my teachers to "OVER-COMMUNICATE" and I want to model that behavior.

With that being said, there are three things that I want to point out in this week's edition of "Bear Tracks".  I will keep the letter brief, but also make sure that you have all of the news you need to know from 3140 BSR.

First, we are continuing to focus on "controlling what we can control" in and around the building.  We decided to hold a STRESS LESS week this week and it was a big success.  Each day was a different theme and it focused on taking a deep breath and realizing that if you allow yourself to de-stress, you are able to focus on what needs to be done and not worry about other things you cannot control.  As I said, it was very successful and we will certainly do it again next year.  In addition to those themes, several departments challenged each other to wear more double blue than the other dept or have more students participate in each day.  This really helped increase the number of teachers and students involved and just added to the culture and climate at Berlin!  All of these pictures can be found on the official twitter page for Berlin @Todd_spinner in addition to all building information and celebrations.

Second, we talked a lot this week about the upcoming exams, reviewing for exams, and the exam schedule.  The schedule has been posted all over the building, it is on our twitter site and also on our website.

Exam days and periods tested each day:
Wednesday December 18
1st, 2nd, 3rd, Lunch
Thursday December 19
4/5, 5/6, 6/7, 7/8, 8/9, 9/10, Lunch
Friday December 20
11th, 12th, Lunch

Every day on the announcements, I let our students know that they need to be where they are supposed to be when they are supposed to be there.  During exam week, students have 2 places they should be when the bell rings to start class.  They should either be in that class, or they are in the commons for silent study hall.  The buses will run at the regular times on all exam days.

So, for example if they do not have an 11th or 12th period exam, they do not need to be in school on Friday the 20th.  If they do come in on that Friday, they should be in the commons for silent studyhall.

If there are any questions about exam week, please either call the office, or contact your students teacher as they will be able to help you.  We realize that this is all new for Freshman parents, so we want to OVER COMMUNICATE 😉

Last, I wanted to let everyone know that our SRO (Dept Gaines) lined up the K9 units to search the parking lot for drugs today during our 4th period class.  It was a very successful search operation as it reminded all students that drugs should not be brought onto the property for any reason.  Like anything that happens at Berlin, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out and I would be happy to help.  I just want all of our students to be safe and drug free.

That is all for now.  Please encourage your students to study over the weekend and to look at review guides and take advantage of all review opportunities available to them.

Clawsup!  Remember, Berlin Pride.... It's Forever!!

Bears -

Another great week at Berlin!  We only had 4 days, but the week was full of really good stuff.  On Monday, our Berlin staff met with staff members from the other high schools for professional development opportunities that revolved around building relationships and supporting a healthy and positive learning culture.  It truly was time well spent.

This past week, our focus in the building has been to prepare our Bears for the upcoming exams.  As I walked the building, teachers were listening to culminating presentations, having review sessions, or wrapping up units of study so as to give complete focus to the mid-term exams.  Next week will be a full week of school and an opportunity for students to make sure they have all work completed and turned in, as well as ask questions about the exams or final projects.

We are holding a STRESS FREE week next week with a different theme each day.

Monday - comfy Monday (sweat pants, footie pajamas, etc...) Comfortable (school appropriate clothing)
Tuesday - yoga Tuesday (wear yoga type clothes) - during homebase, students can learn some easy yoga poses
Wednesday - CRAZY holiday / Christmas sweater day
Thursday - LARGE t-shirt day.  Wear a very comfy / large t-shirt (pants too please 😉)
Friday - Fun Friday (Mix up that double-blue attire) - mix matched socks, etc...

Speaking of exams, they will take place on the 18th, 19th and 20th.  The schedule is on the website, attached to this letter and also is on the main twitter site as well as our Student Services twitter page.  **Students need to be where they need to be when they need to be there**

I also want to remind all students that the goal is to FINISH STRONG!  You have worked hard all year long.  Focus the next week and a half and go into break knowing you gave it your best shot!  In addition to finishing strong academically, our winter sports are in full effect and I would encourage all students to take a study break, go and support other Bears, and then get back to studying!!

Seniors - When this semester is over, you have one semester of high school left.  Make GOOD decisions academically, socially and in all other areas.  Do not do anything that would jeopardize what you have worked for your entire educational career.

That is all for now...  CLAWSUP!!

Bears -

What a great way to end a great week.....  Senior Thanksgiving!!  I had heard about it when my daughter was at OHS, but getting to experience it in person is a totally different experience!  280 seniors gathered together for a great meal with close friends and teachers that really care about them.  We had roast beef, turkey, noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing and rolls...  Every table had a thanksgiving centerpiece and even the table cloths had turkeys on them.  There were several parents here volunteering to help serve food and get great pictures as well.  We ate as a class, gave thanks as a class, took TONS of pictures (I am sure twitter will be busy tonight) to share on the building twitter page and then went to the gym to take the FIRST ever senior picture.  Once that was done, we circled up and sang our Alma Mater.  What a great way to end a great week.

I am so proud of not only our seniors, but of all of our students at Berlin.  We had all-class meetings this week and we talked about the following:

Academics
Athletics
Social behavior
Finishing strong and a lot of other things!  Please ask them about all of this.

That is all for now.  Please make sure that you get on our website as well as continue to follow the building twitter page for all of the latest BERLIN BEAR information.

Thank you and Remember, BERLIN PRIDE....ITS FOREVER!!

Bears -

The weeks seem to be flying by now as we move closer to the second half of the second nine weeks.  We had a tremendous beginning of the school year and I just wanted to send out some highlights as well as some reminders and updates on upcoming events and activities.

First, what a great second year season for all of our fall sports teams!!  All of our sports and activities had a lot of second year success, and even though football was the last one to finish, it left all of us wanting more next year as the momentum we built as a community (5,500 came to watch on Friday nights), will carry into the winter season.  In addition, our Pride of the Bears marching band was excellent again and our theater department put on a great mystery / comedy that showed off our talented Bears!!

Here are a few highlights so far from the last 13 weeks.  I know that I will miss some things, but it is always good to look back and smile at our students and what they have done in and around 3140BSR!

6-5 football record (qualified for playoffs!!)

11 awesome band shows!

Great mystery comedy performance in theater

Quiz bowl team continues to rack up victories

Gaming club has put on tons of competitions and tournaments

EPIC boys golf season

The MOMSTER ball

Great community events - Warrior display

Veterans day celebration

160 male choir celebration

Under the lights

Students getting accepted into colleges (Historic!)

Students earning league, district and state honors!

6 total music concerts (orchestra, choir, band)

Senior nights for all of our fall seasons (EPIC)

As I said, I know I missed things and all of you have your favorites and probably could have added a few more to the list, but this is a great start!!

As we move into the end of the nine weeks, I want to remind all of you of a few things:

1 - the exam schedule is attached.  It is also on the website. The exams are different at the high school level.  Please look at the schedule and remember that students are responsible for being where they are supposed to be when they are supposed to be there.  Also, it is school. Blankets, pillows, slippers are not acceptable 🙂

2 - Attendance is KEY at all times in the year, but at the end of the nine weeks, we need to make sure students are here on time and in the building.  This is for safety and accountability purposes

3 - Academics - Please remind your student to FINISH STRONG.  There are 4 weeks left in the nine weeks. FINISH STRONG

4 - Communicate - twitter, email, website, etc...  Please stay up on what is happening at BERLIN

That is all for now, and please know that I appreciate all of your constant support and efforts, and please reach out if you need anything from any of us here in the building.

Please remember - BERLIN PRIDE.... IT'S FOREVER!!

Bears -

I hope everyone reading this is enjoying a great week!  We are excited over here at Berlin for many reasons each week, but this week and next we definitely have some things to both celebrate and take a minute to reflect upon as we go about our day.

First, we had a number of students in our choral department represent Berlin with Pride at the  "Ohio Capital Conference Honor Choir" performance.  I was amazed at the musicality and talent of our young people!  Congratulations to our Bears involved and I want to thank them for a very enjoyable evening!  What a great honor for them and for our building!

Next, our OBHS Football team has qualified for the playoffs.  Many people do not know that out of the 28 Varsity high school Team sports, Football is the ONLY sport where you have to qualify to make the playoffs.  Every other sport could go 0-20, 0-24, 0-10, etc., and still qualify.

With that being said:

The OBHS football team is 1 of only 8 schools in Region 7 to make the playoffs (27 teams total)
1 of only 32 schools in division 2 (107 teams total) 29.9% of D2 schools reach playoffs
1 of 224 teams in the state to make the playoffs (710 teams total) 31.5% of all schools make playoffs

This is a BIG DEAL!!  In a nutshell,  70% of all high school football teams in the State are not playing tonight...  Guess who is playing?  Your Berlin Bears!!  Last, we are celebrating and honoring Veteran's day on Monday here in the building.  We will have a color / honor guard, our orchestra and choir performing, our drum line and over 80 Veteran's walking in an indoor parade surrounded by 1,300 students!  We have veterans from WWII up to current day soldiers that just finished their duty for their country.  What a great way to honor, celebrate and learn about everything that these men and women have done for all of us.  Special thanks to Mrs Gestosani for putting this together!

Last, we have had a lot of whole building conversations, one on one conversations and small group conversations about treating each other with respect and kindness, and continuing to make sure that this is a harassment / bullying free environment where all of us respect and celebrate diversity and each others unique differences.  We constantly remind students that if they do feel this is occurring, they need to let one of us know, and that we will address it.  It is also important to know that sometimes consequences cannot be seen nor shared (privacy act), but they are happening.   We have a Bear belief statement that is in the main entrance area (6' x 6') and also in each classroom.  We cover this often.  I have never been in a building other than ours where they have this.  If you have, please let me know as I would like to see it and applaud them for doing so!   I run the building as if my own children are here, and guess what, he is!!

That is all for now, Clawsup!!
Berlin Pride.....Its Forever!!

Bears -

It was great to have a 5 day week!  I have some quick bullet points for all of you as we head into this Football Friday night weekend!!

  • Seniors, please make sure that you are paying attention to the dates and times on the senior checklist you were given at the beginning of the first nine weeks!
  • All students, please make sure that you are "controlling what you can control".  When it comes to academics, athletics, social life and extra curricular activities, make good decisions and "control what you can control!"
  • Our theater dept is putting on a great scary / comedy this weekend.  Please check the website for details as there are 3 different performance times!

Bears -

This was a short week, but a great week!  Between soccer, NHS and other activities, there was something every night!

I want to remind all of our parents and students of a few things as we have just wrapped up the first nine weeks.
  • The second nine weeks is a great opportunity to improve upon some things students could have done better the first nine weeks
  • The first nine weeks does not define a students grade for the first semester.  It is a combination of both nine weeks.
  • We have well over 50 groups, clubs and activities at Berlin.  Please encourage your student to get involved in something if they have not already done so
  • Follow the building twitter page if you have not already done so.  Also, if you have not received messages from me over text this year, please call the main office.  Every time we have a delay or an important message, I am very good about sending something out.
  • Regardless of your students grade level, they should have or be planning on meeting one on one with their counselor.  This builds the relationship and also is a good check point.  Please ask if they have done so
  • Do your best to encourage your student to attend an event maybe that they might not have interest in.  If they do not like football, maybe they go to a game to just see what it is like.  Same for theater or band.  Why not?  If nothing else, they gave it a shot and helped to support other Bears!!
  • Last, send out a note to a teacher or two if you get a chance to just check up on your student.  This helps to keep the lines of communication open on both ends.
That is all for now.  This was a great first nine weeks and I am very excited about what the future holds for all of our Bears!

CLAWSUP!  Remember, Berlin Pride....It's Forever!!

Bears -

What a GREAT Homecoming week!!  The halls were filled with students and staff participating in all of the theme days.  I would encourage you to jump on the building Twitter page (OlentangyBerlinBears @Todd_Spinner ) and check them out for yourself!  They are also all over our teachers pages as well because they truly love being a part of the 3140 BSR culture! The culture that we have built here is not just wristbands, posters, theme days, sunglasses, bear bumps, claws up, but it is a PURPOSEFUL way of doing things and treating each other so that it is an inclusive and nurturing environment.  We have built and continue to build a culture and environment that reflects the belief statement located in all of the classrooms and in the entrance to the building. With that being said, we have a BIG game tonight, and a great opportunity to gather tomorrow for a Victory Homecoming dance!!

Speaking of the dance, here are a few reminders and also heads up for Freshman parents or parents of students that have never attended before:

  • I have PURPOSEFULLY developed a "parent paparazzi" for the kids to walk through when they enter the dance.  Parents are welcomed to line the OUTSIDE of the building up the walkway and take pictures as if it were the red carpet entrance.  Please do not come into the building as we are setting up and preparing.
  • The dance is from 8:00-11:00PM.  Please know that students will not be allowed to enter until 8:00PM, and then please make sure you are here at 11:00PM (or earlier) to pick them up.  I normally am starving by 11:00PM and want to go home and eat 😉
  • Students will all get a dance wristband when they enter.  If they are not dancing appropriately, the wristband will be cut off.  If they do it a 2nd time, they will leave the dance.  Remind them that I am the Principal and not a nightclub owner.  We want them to have fun, but dance as if you are at a wedding reception with your family.  Be goofy, let loose, but be appropriate 😉
  • Do not bring anything into the dance that could get lost.  We have a shoe and coat check for $1, but there is not any reason to bring a lot of money or any other items into the dance.  Snacks and drinks will be provided.
  • We want all kids to come back safely on Monday.  Please, please, please, remind them to make good decisions.  They are all GREAT kids. However, even great kids make poor decisions sometimes.

That is all for now.  Let's get a big victory tonight and then enjoy a fun, safe and successful dance on Saturday!!

Clawsup!

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE: BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL UPDATE

10/04/19

Bears - HOMECOMING WEEK IS HERE!!

I purposely put that in bold lettering, because it is a very exciting and important time in a high school student's career.  However, the only way it can be a fun and memorable experience, is if everyone does what they are supposed to do. So, parents, I am asking for your help.  These are reminders and items that all of us need to work together to accomplish. I am going to list out the events and activities, and then follow up with how you can help.  Here we go...

Spirit Week Days for Students

Monday - Maui Monday

Tik Tok / Twin Day Tuesday - Bonfire that night after boys soccer game

Decades Wednesday (50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s...)

Jerzday Thursday (Wear your favorite jersey)

Double Blue Friday - Pep rally, parade, and Football Friday Night!!

Saturday - HOMECOMING DANCE - 8:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. (Berlin Commons)

All of us want our students to have fun and make memories, but here is where we all need to pull on the same side of the rope.  I will be doing this at school, so if we can echo each other, that would be great:

-Have fun with the spirit days, but your outfit MUST BE school appropriate.

-The bonfire is HOT...  There will be 300-400 students, the band, the cheerleaders, the FB team, etc...  Dress accordingly and bring your phone for videos and pics. It is REALLY cool!!

-The Dance... All of our kids are great kids, but even great kids make poor decisions.  Texting and driving cannot happen.  There are SOOO many kids on the road on Saturday night.  Remind them to be extra cautious!

-  The use of any illegal substances (drugs and alcohol) cannot happen.  Too many things weigh in the balance (lives, futures, etc).

-Appropriate dancing needs to occur.  The rule of thumb is to dance as if you were at a wedding reception with your family.  Have fun, be goofy, enjoy yourself, but this is not a nightclub and I am not a nightclub owner.  I am the Principal. So, if students are dancing inappropriately, they will be called out and might feel embarrassed.  So, dance appropriately, and I promise there is nothing to worry about!!

-All students will get a wristband at the dance, and if they are dancing inappropriately, they will get it removed and may be removed from the dance.

-The dance ends promptly at 11:00 p.m.  Parents, please be out front at 11:00 p.m. to pick up your student.  They feel embarrassed if they have to wait a while for a ride. They like talking to me, but not that much 😉

That is all for now.  If we send the same message at school and at home, we can have a very successful and FUN Homecoming Week, Game, and Dance!!

Thank you, Claws-up, and Remember... Berlin Pride... It's Forever!!

Another great week at 3140 BSR!  This edition of the Principal's message is a reminder edition...  We have a lot of great things happening in and around the building, so I would ask that you follow the website, twitter pages, emails, etc., so that you are up to speed on everything pertaining to the DOUBLEBLUE!!

Here we go with some general reminders.  Some of these might be repeat information, but as I have said many times, my goal is to OVER communicate.

  • Dress Code - If your student has to ask themselves if it is an appropriate outfit, chances are it is not
  • Bells - We tell the kids that they ring for a reason...  😉
  • BYOD building.  We are a Bring Your Own Device to class building.  We encourage using technology when it is appropriate
  • Bear Belief Statement.  We have this in every classroom.  Please remind students to review the statement
  • Sports and extracurricular activities - All school rules apply - Represent the DoubleBlue with pride!
  • Academic expectations - This is the reason we are here.
  • Homecoming dance (any dances) - This is a high school dance and I am a Principal and not a nightclub owner.  Students need to dance and dress appropriately.  We need your help reminding them 😉

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE: BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL UPDATE

9/20/19
Bears,

Even though it was only a 4 day week, it was a great one!  We are on a Homebase schedule today, like the other high schools, so that our students were able to fill out an anonymous survey.  This will help us better understand concerns, issues or ideas that our students might have and how to better address all of those.  In addition, it will help us to make OBHS the best HS it can be!  We will also be on a Homebase schedule next Tuesday so our clawteam can discuss Homecoming, appropriate behavior, attire, etc., with all of our freshman students.  We want to help every step of the way.

With that being said, here are some bullet point items and dates to keep everyone in the loop!

  • We are half way through the first nine weeks.  Please double check Powerschool with your student and see where they are academically.  It is a GREAT half way check!
  • Thursday, September 26th and October 3rd are both Parent/Teacher conference nights.  3:30-7:00pm - see you there!
  • Volleyball has a Volley for the Cure on Thursday the 26th as well.  Big bake sale that night!
  • The Suburban College Fair information is approaching.  See the information in the Bear Tracks!
  • The FASFA website and application will open on Oct 1st for Senior parents.
  • Our groups, clubs and activities are in full swing!  Please encourage your student to get involved and visit a club!
  • We always have sporting events in and around Berlin.  We have a home football game tonight at 7:00pm.  The weather will be fantastic - See you at the game!
That is all for now.  Please know that we are working hard to teach, show and model all expectations in and around Berlin, so if you ever have any questions or concerns about anything, please reach out.

Thank you for your support, and remember....Berlin Pride.....It's Forever!

 Bears,

Another great week at Olentangy Berlin High School. Just a few reminders for this weeks Bear Tracks.

First, please make sure that you visit the website from time to time and also check the building Twitter site for information.  We work hard to over communicate and want to make sure that everyone is on the same page.

Next, if you are the parent of a freshman student, please continue to have conversations with them about the transition into the high school. We have worked very hard to make these smooth, but obviously there are times when students might struggle making the transition.
Everything from dress code to acting appropriately in the lunch room or topics of conversation. We have very high expectations at the high school level at Olentangy Berlin and we just want to make sure that our students understand those expectations.

Last, there is no school on Monday, September 16th.  Please encourage your students to take all of their work home over the weekend and study and make sure that they are focused and ready to go on Tuesday.

We have had a great start to the school year, and I am looking for continued success, and I appreciate all of your help and support!

If you ever have any questions comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out or touch base with me at an event. There are very few events that I do not attend, so I am easily accessible to parents when need be.

Clawsup!!  And remember Berlin pride, it’s forever!

Bears -

We just finished up with an all building pep rally where we talked about school spirit, inclusiveness, doing things the right way and making sure that we stay together and strengthen the framework of the BEAR FAMILY!!  Wow, was it a good one!  We also recognized the Band, the Cheerleaders and all of our Fall athletes.  It truly is a special and memorable time when all 1,300 get together and celebrate who we are!

With that being said, we are now 2 and a half weeks in and are really doing some great things in and around the building.  I know that the students have truly settled in and are all moving in the right direction.  We will soon be starting our performing arts concerts and rehearsing for our theater performances.  Also, parent / teacher conferences are on September 26th and information will be coming next week in regard to signing up for time-slots.

Thank you for all of your continued support and please remember, Berlin Pride....Its Forever!

Bear Families -

What a fantastic week here at 3140 BSR!!

We had our first all-class meetings of the year and they were very well received and our students took in and digested a lot of information revolving around:

Academics
Athletics
Extra Curricular guidelines
Expectations here in the building
Our Bear Belief statement
Timeline for the year
Information from Student Services
Words of advice, encouragement and support from the Principal... 😉

With that being said, we also had our Freshman parent meeting and not only was that well attended, but we covered a lot of information.  All of that information can be found on our building website.

Last, I have some bullet point reminders for everyone as we head into a 3 day weekend here at Berlin:

  • Home football game tonight 7:00PM.
  • No School Monday September 2nd.
  • BYOD - (Bring Your Own Device) - We want to encourage students to bring chromebooks or laptops to school.
  • Parking permits - This is a safety issue.  ALL student vehicles need to have a permit.  We will start enforcing next week.  Students also must park in the front of the building.  There are PLENTY of spots.
  • Pep-Rally schedule on September 6th for our game against Canal Winchester.
That is all for now.  Please continue to communicate with teachers or administration if you have questions or concerns.  I want to thank you for all of your continued support of OBHS!

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE: BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL UPDATE

8/23/19
Bears -

GREAT 1st week.  Other than the unavoidable power outage on Tuesday,  our students, staff and faculty responded very well to a brand new EPIC year at OBHS!  We have a SEA of double blue in the building today.  It is really a site to see when there are 1,300 students (4 grades!!) that buy in to being a part of something bigger than themselves.  The Family atmosphere and "shoulder to shoulder" attitude is a special one, but it takes everyone constantly working together to make it happen.  We need to be purposeful in all areas; Building relationships, setting expectations, and being accountable!

With all of that being said, I wanted to send a few end of the week reminders and notes (expectations for students) and I am going to lay it out in bullet point style.  I want to make sure that I am always communicating!
  • Dress code - The rule of thumb for me is always, if a student has to ask themself in the morning if the outfit is school appropriate, then most of the time it is not.  We have shirts and other items to help correct choices that are not appropriate, but we are asking for you to send the same message at home as well.  We want students to be comfortable, but there is a dress code for a reason.  Thank you!
  • Attendance - Both before 1st period and all periods throughout the day, students need to be on time.  This is 100% for safety and accountability reasons.  We monitor and work with students on a daily basis.  This never has been an issue at Berlin, but we want to continue to send the message
  • Parking - Students need to have a parking tag if they are in our parking lot.  Tags can be purchased in student services.  We will be monitoring for safety reasons all year long.  The entire form needs to be filled out please.
  • Senior Memory book information is available with this email.  It is an OLSD tradition, don't miss out!!
  • The Senior parent meeting went VERY well! Information can be found on our website.   There are a lot of important dates and times on the site.
  • Football games - Students are not to bring anything other than their double blue spirit!!  We do not allow bags or drinks in the stadium on football Friday night.  This is for safety and security reasons and goes for stringbags, food, drinks, etc...  There is an admission fee for tonight's scrimmage ($5.00)
  • Class meetings - We will have all class meetings next week to discuss all areas in and around OBHS.  We will focus on academics, behavior, attendance, groups, clubs, activities, extra curricular areas, etc...
Thank you for your constant support and being involved with things in and around OBHS.  I know that your student wants you to be involved even if they might not communicate that to you.  Your involvement makes their experience at Berlin that much more memorable.  Last, please continue to check the website, the twitter page and emails so you are always up to speed on everything here at 3140 BSR.
