Digital Safety

Digital Safety is making safe, ethical, and responsible decisions when using digital technologies. Just like we teach our children about safety in the real world, we need to do the same online.

Family Activity: Create a Family Tech Agreement

This activity is designed to identify how to be safe online.  Creating a family tech plan allows for children to be a part of the process, giving them a voice when creating expectations for technology use at home.

Instructions:

  1. Schedule a time to meet as a family.  Using the Family Tech Planner provided by Common Sense Media or your own planner, hold a discussion with your family about online safety and family technology expectations.

  1. It is important to acknowledge the different age groups and expectations for each age group.
  2. Together, write down these expectations in a clear and concise agreement. It is important to set expectations but it is a valuable learning experience for children to have a voice in this process.
  3. Have your child sign the agreement and post it somewhere visible as a reminder.
  4. Continually review the agreement and ask how well we are following the agreement.  Is the agreement working well or can it be changed to better meet our expectations as a family.

Discussion Questions:

  • What are some potential risks your child might encounter online?
  • How can we work together to create a safe online environment?
  • What are some online resources you can use to learn more about digital safety?
