Digital Fluency
Digital Fluency is the ability to discover, evaluate, communicate, and use information through digital technologies effectively, ethically, and efficiently. As students embark on a digital learning journey, digital fluency becomes crucial. It is about navigating the vast online world effectively, just like navigating a library filled with countless books.
Family Activity: Website Detective
This activity is designed for families to have conversations about the use of the Internet. Children will gain confidence in their ability to navigate the digital world and find information independently.
Instructions:
- Choose a website relevant to your child's interests or a site they like to visit (e.g., educational game, kid-friendly news site).
- Explore the website together. Help your child identify different parts of the page (navigation bar, search bar, content sections, advertisement).
- Discuss the different parts of the website: What is the website about? How can you find information on the website? Does the site have advertisements and how do you think the ads are generated?
- Do you like visiting this website? Why or Why not? What about the website makes you want to come back to it? Encourage critical thinking by discussing the purpose of the website and the information it provides.
- After listening and sharing ideas about the website, ask yourself if the website seems too old, young, or just right for you. Give reasons for your answer.
Discussion Questions:
- How can we use technology as a tool to help us?
- What websites do different family members use every day?
- What is the purpose of each of the websites?
- What are some ways we can help your child feel comfortable asking questions about technology?
