The Pupil Services Department is committed to meeting the unique needs of students with disabilities by offering a continuum of services and supports. Olentangy Local Schools believes that every child can learn, and we offer a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to all children ages 3 through 21 with disabilities living within Olentangy’s boundaries. In accordance with Federal and State law, Olentangy maintains an ongoing effort to identify, locate, and evaluate children with disabilities in the district who are in need of special education and/or related aides and services.
A child may be identified as a student with a disability and eligible for special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (“IDEA”) or under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (“Section 504”). A child identified as a student with a disability under the IDEA is one who has been evaluated and determined to meet the definition of one of Ohio’s thirteen disability categories, which include (1) intellectual disability, (2) hearing impairment (including deafness), (3) speech or language impairment, (4) visual impairment (including blindness), (5) serious emotional disturbance ("emotional disturbance"), (6) orthopedic impairment, (7) autism, (8) traumatic brain injury, (9) other health impairment, (10) specific learning disability, (11) deaf-blindness, (12) developmental delay (for a child between the ages of three and nine), and (13) multiple disabilities, and who, by reason thereof, requires special education and related services. A student identified as a student with a disability under Section 504 is a student who has been evaluated and determined to have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, has a record of such impairment, or is regarded as having such an impairment.
If you suspect your child may have a disability, whether under the IDEA or Section 504, please contact your child’s teacher, principal, or the Pupil Services office at 740-657-4070.
Pupil Services Supervisors oversee each school and are available to provide specialized information and guidance regarding assessment, specially designed instruction, related services support, or any other questions or concerns regarding a child’s educational placement.
Parent Mentors provide support, free of charge, to parents in an effort to help them understand the Special Education Process. The district implements this statewide program to encourage a collaborative relationship between school and home. A Parent Mentor is a district employee and also the parent of a child with a disability.
