A breakfast meal consists of 4 items: grain(s), protein, fruit/vegetable, and milk. According to the School Breakfast Program (SBP) students must select at least 3 of the 4 items, one of which must be either a fruit or a vegetable.
A lunch consists of 5 components: an entree, which is 2 components (protein and grain), fruit, vegetable, and milk. According to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), students must select at least 3 of the 5 components, one of which must be either a fruit or vegetable. At the elementary and middle school levels students can select up to 2 servings of vegetables and 1 serving of fruit and at the high school level students can select up to 2 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit.
