As the new school year approaches, Olentangy Schools is reminding families of important transportation safety expectations for students who travel to and from school by bike, e-bike, scooter, or skateboard.

Creating a safe learning environment begins before students enter the classroom. To help ensure students arrive safely and understand expectations on school grounds, families are encouraged to review school transportation guidelines together before the first day of school.

Expectations on School Property

To promote safety for all students, staff, and visitors, students must follow these rules while on campus:

• Students must dismount upon entering school property.
• E-bikes and electric scooters must be powered off and disabled while on school grounds.
• Bikes, e-bikes, and scooters must be walked or pushed on school property.
• Skateboards must be carried and may not be ridden on school grounds.
• These expectations apply before, during, and after the school day, including arrival and dismissal times.

Safe Travel Practices

Students using bikes, e-bikes, scooters, or skateboards are also expected to follow rules of the road and practice safe riding habits, including:

• Obeying all traffic signs and signals.
• Stopping at intersections and crosswalks.
• Traveling in the direction of traffic.
• Using hand signals when riding a bicycle or e-bike.
• Watching for pedestrians, school buses, and vehicles.
• Avoiding distractions while riding.

Olentangy Schools strongly recommends that all students wear a helmet when using bikes, e-bikes, scooters, or skateboards for transportation. The use of front and rear lights and reflectors is also encouraged, especially during periods of reduced visibility, to help riders remain visible to motorists, pedestrians, and others sharing the roadway.

Community Partnership Supports Student Safety

Student safety extends beyond school campuses. Olentangy Schools continues to partner with the Delaware County Sheriff's Office and local law enforcement agencies to promote safe transportation practices and reinforce expectations that help keep students safe while traveling to and from school.
