Oak Creek Elementary School (OCES) held a First Grade Literacy Night at the school October 2. Literacy support teacher Lynn Wypasek and Title 1 teachers Brittni Barth and Kelly Echelberry presented at the workshop, which was designed to educate parents on support strategies to use with their children at home. Parents were introduced to the components of first grade reading instruction via video clips of actual OCES students. Parents also learned about assessment, shared reading, guided reading, independent reading, word study and writing, and how all of these components work together to create reading success for their children. The teachers often hear “how do we support our children with reading at home?” They answer that the home-to-school connection is critical to developing a child who loves to read.
