Helping Children Cope with Tragic Events

As Olentangy prepares to return to school tomorrow, many parents and children are dealing with a wide range of emotions and questions.  The district has compiled the following resources in hopes they may provide our families some assistance during this difficult time.

  • After the Trauma: Helping My Child Cope – The School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA) provides a reader-friendly guide with specific examples of things parents can say and do in the aftermath of a tragic event.
  • Tips for Talking to Children – The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) provides tips for talking to children from infancy through adolescence.  The tips are available in English, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese.
  • Parent Guidelines for Helping Youth After the Recent School Shooting – The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) provides a list of common reactions to traumatic events and ideas of how parents can help themselves cope while helping their children deal with their own emotions.
  • Olentangy Safety Overview – this page provides basic safety information about our district.
