Two Freedom Trail Elementary School (FTES) staff members were recently recognized by the Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio (DSACO) for their service to one very special FTES student.
FTES first-grade teacher Jannette Olenick and intervention aide Beth Demidovich were presented with a Commitment to Excellence Award from the DSACO during the organization’s World Down Syndrome Day awards banquet held March 21. The award recognizes community members who give extraordinary services to individuals with Down syndrome and their families.
Olenick and Demidovich were nominated for the honor by Lora and Shawn Eichel, whose daughter is a first-grade student with Down syndrome at FTES. Lora Eichel said she nominated Olenick and Demidovich for their dedicated service to her daughter, the first student with Down syndrome to attend the school.
“We picked them because they have been wonderful with her and, if we could, we would have nominated the whole school,” Lora Eichel said, adding that she has been impressed with everyone at FTES.
“Our daughter has just flourished since she’s been there, and a lot of that is because of the supportive environment at Freedom Trail Elementary,” she said.
