Music and Art Students Join Dr. Lucas at Benefit Concert

Olentangy was well represented at a recent concert entitled “Playing From the Heart” to benefit Nationwide Children’s Hospital Heart Center.  This event has been presented for over twenty years by the Benefit Concert Association as a fund-raisng activity for the hospital.  An art competition was also part of the event this year, and Olentangy’s art teachers Beth Lucek, Sarah Zwick, Robin Schorr, Teresa Shawberry, Briana Kindberg and their students submitted pieces that would hopefully create joy and inspire sick children.  Winners of the art competition were judged by the members of the Benefit Concert Association and David Hinds, theatre director at Olentangy High School.  The art winners were:

  • Ivy D., Olentangy Liberty High School
  • Brigid F., Olentangy High School
  • Lauren W., Olentangy High School
  • Paul P., Olentangy Orange High School
  • Baylie B., Olentangy Orange High School

The jazz band and chamber orchestra from Olentangy High School performed under the directon of Ian Brun and Michelle Moss and Olentangy’s superintendent Dr. Wade Lucas was the keynote speaker.  The program celebrated the completion of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital campus expansion.

It’s natural for parents to want to protect and support their children, but how much is too much? On May 2, the Olentangy Parent Programs Team (PPT) presented a 90-minute examining the effects of hovering too closely to our children as they transition to adolescence and struggle to achieve their own identity and independence. Author Joe Bruzzese provided parents a positive, light-hearted look at the new set of parenting skills it takes to stay connected with children while fostering their independence.

Joe Bruzzese began his career as a teacher and coach, and those experiences paved the way to his first book, “A Parent’s Guide to the Middle School Years.” Bruzzese travels the country sharing his insight on parenting. He is also an instructor at the University of California at Santa Barbara and Azusa Pacific University and a featured contributor to Momster.com, a parenting website created by Family Circle magazine.
